The Englewood Jaycees
proudly presents the 2008
Pioneer Days Cardboard Boat Races
at Indian Mounds Park in Englewood Florida
on Saturday August 30, 2008.

The following pictures are in the approximate order that I took them.

I walked around the picnic area and tried to photograph
all the boats that were competing.

All the designs were colorful and unique

However some were still struggling to see who would be captain :)

I thought this antique Chris Craft entry was very well done.

This boat was entered by the Stump Pass Grille. If you've never been there you should check it out. Great food and drinks and a giant Tiki Hut by the bay. For more information and directions visit their web site at: www.StumpPassGrille.com

A classic for sure

The crowd had overtaken the entire bank of the park and
Captain Rick got the races started around 10 am.

I won't go into detail about all the races... but there were several classes of boats that raced 2 - 4 at a time. The following pictures will show you some of the race highlights as well as some casual portraits
of some of the spectators.

The New Bobarino's Pizzeria was having a coloring contest for kids to win a large pizza every 2 hours. Like Pizza? Try Bobarino's on Green Street and Dearborn (941) 473-0000

Of course there are always casualties.
Many of these boats don't make it home after the race :(

Awards were given out right after the races. I tried to get a picture of all the winners... although I think everyone that raced was really a winner...
